The Twelve Days of Kindness – Day 12, Act 138

Friday, December 25, Day 12, Act 138:

Merry Christmas everyone!

Today as we all celebrated Christmas and spending time with friends and family, eating, opening presents, etc.; we have to take the time to remember those not able to partake of all the festivities. So my parents and I took some Christmas dinner down to my grandmother who just came home from the hospital and spent the afternoon with her.  She got to open her presents, had a wonderful Christmas dinner, and enjoyed spending time with her family!

This ends the Twelve Days of Kindness coinciding with the Twelve Days of Christmas.  I hope your twelve days was a wonderful journey too. Continue on your kindness deeds and please share them with us on the blog.  Thanks.

Merry Christmas and have a Blessed New Year!

happy holidays

The Twelve Days of Kindness – Day 10, Act 136

Wednesday, December 23, Day 10, Act 136:

Today my grandmother got to come home from the hospital. She had been in the skilled nursing unit (rehab therapy) for about 2 weeks. What a great Christmas present for her to be able to come home for Christmas to spend time with her family.  I went over to her house and met her and my parents for a welcome home celebration for her return!

Weekend with Grandma – Act 114 & 115

Saturday, August 1 and Sunday, August 2, 2009

There could not have been a better weekend to start back up with my daily acts of kindness!

My parents were out of town and my grandmother is pretty much not able move around very much at home or go out. So I spent the weekend taking care of her. I brought her dinner and spent some time with her Saturday afternoon and early evening. I also made sure to check in on her and take care of her on Sunday too.

The funny part is, Saturday she really wanted a couple of hot dogs for dinner. In the town where she lives, I found out there are not hot dog places open on the weekend. I drove all over the city looking for anywhere that had hot dogs. I found the local bowling alley, but it was closed on the weekends for the summer, no where else had anything. I even ended up inside an Exxon to pick up a couple of dogs, but after viewing them in the rotisserie box, they were dried up and looked like they had been spinning around for weeks.

Needless to say my grandma had to settle for a Wendy’s burger. Which she didn’t mind at all because she scarfed it down in no time. I wish I could have found hot dogs for her, but I got to enjoy driving around her city for a little while…….

Act 101

Thursday, April 23, 2009.

This evening I went to the mall to pick up my grandma a birthday gift. Now this is not the kind act, hopefully anyone would buy their grandmother a birthday gift. Wait for it, wait for it…..lotion

While I was picking up my grandma’s gift, I bought my wife a surprise also. Just something to let her know that I was thinking of her.

Act 92

Tuesday, April 14, 2009.

I am making an effort to spend more time with my Grandmother. Everyone should do it, but I am not waiting any longer to spend some quality time with her. I remember spending entire weekends with her when I was growing up, and going to her house all the time.

I need to get that familiarity back. So today, I went and had lunch with her again. It is nice to sit and eat with her and hear stories from her youth or about what she used to do in her younger years. She is getting older each day and as I get older myself I am working to spend more time with her. I want to take advantage of hanging out with my Grandma the way we all did when I was young. Her time here is growing short and I want to take advantage of every chance before it is gone.

Act 90

Sunday, April 12, 2009.

Happy Easter everyone!easter-eggs

I know many families have traditions on holidays, and ours is no different. My parents, grandma, and me and my wife always get together for a wonderful Easter feast in the afternoon after church. Like alot of other families I’m sure. But things are different than what I remember them, my grandfather is no longer with us, and my grandmother is now barely able to walk and uses a wheelchair to get around. Everyone has to get older, I know, but it is hard to take when you see your grandma almost slipping away.

With her wheelcwheelchair-symbolhair, she gets around okay, but needs assistance often. She is limited to ground level activities as she can no longer go up and down steps. Even though my parents live in a house with only four steps to access either door, my grandma had turned down the dinner offer. That wasn’t going to happen.

I went and picked her up and loaded her wheelchair into the back of the car. We got to my parents’ house and I helped her out of the car and retrieved her chair for her to use. Then we rolled up to the porch. I had my dad come out and help me as we just picked up her wheelchair (with her still in it) and carried it up the steps into the house. Needless to say, we had a wonderful dinner and enjoyable afternoon.

When Grandma was ready to go, my dad helped me again to carry Grandma and the chair back down the steps. We rolled her out to the car for our return trip back to her house and what a wonderful Easter day it was!

Act 78

lunch-tableTuesday, March 31, 2009.

Today I surprised my Grandma with lunch. I enjoyed having lunch with her the other day, so I surprised her with bringing lunch to her again today. It is nice to sit and eat with her and hear stories from her youth or about what she used to do in her younger years. She is getting older each day and as I get older myself I am working to spend more time with her. I want to take advantage of hanging out with my Grandma the way we all did when we were young. Her time here is growing short and I want to take advantage of every chance before it is gone.
